Eating a Granny Smith apple a day restores a healthy weight
According to researchers at Washington State University, Granny Smith apples act as a prebiotic in the gut, changing the type of bacteria in obese people, and becoming more similar to those found in people of normal weight.
Their study, recently published in the journal Food Chemistry, highlights the beneficial effects of apples on gut bacteria.
We know the nutritional benefits and the beneficial effects of apples on our health. Apples are a good source of fiber, and different varieties of apples provide different amounts of fiber and other nutritional compounds.
Granny Smith apples are rich in fiber and polyphenols, and they are especially lower in available carbohydrates than other varieties of sweeter apples. These properties of Granny Smith make it particularly advantageous for promoting the colonies of bacteria in the intestine associated with a healthy weight.
The National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) and its MetaHIT research program have already explained in the journal Nature that a less diverse intestinal microbiota promotes the risk of obesity.
In fact, the same bacterial composition is not found in overweight or obese people, compared to people with a healthy weight and normal eating behavior.
Certain bacteria favor the elimination of dietary fat while other bacteria favor a food behavior directed towards a greater consumption of sugary foods and bad fats. A high-quality intestinal microbiota also makes it possible to better metabolize and efficiently use the fats provided by food.
In the study, the researchers tested the effects on the intestinal flora (microbiota) of different varieties of apples: Braeburn, Fuji, Gala, Golden Delicious, McIntosh and Red Delicious. They compared the influence of these apples on bacteria in the gut of obese mice, compared to bacteria in the gut of lean mice.
Granny Smith apples have the highest amount of non-digestible compounds and have altered the levels of gut bacteria in obese mice much more favorably than other apple varieties.
The nondigestible compounds in Granny Smith apples effectively altered the proportions of fecal bacteria in obese mice by making them similar to those in lean mice, noted Giuliana Noratto, PhD, in charge of the study.
In order to maintain or regain a healthy weight, it is advisable to consume an apple a day, choosing Granny Smith or a similar variety.
