Antioxidants, anti-aging

Antioxidants, anti-aging

It’s the very functioning of cells that generates free radicals. The natural antioxidants present in food counter these aggressors responsible for aging.

Antioxidants help counter the negative effects of free radicals. Like a miniature thermal power plant, the cell in the presence of oxygen produces energy by burning sugar and fat. This phenomenon releases free radicals, that is to say unstable atoms or molecules (one excess or one electron).

Vitamins, carotenoids, trace elements

There are many natural antioxidants produced by our body or provided by food (enzymes, vitamins C and E, carotenoids, trace elements). Vitamin C inhibits free radicals inside the cell. Through the formation of collagen, vitamin C from fruits and vegetables (citrus, kiwi, strawberries, cabbage, spinach, etc.) helps give elasticity to the skin.

Vitamin E and carotenoids protect cell membranes and help regenerate cells. They are found in vegetable oils, oleaginous fruits (nuts, hazelnuts, almonds, etc.), whole grains, green leafy vegetables, etc. Other antioxidants, carotenoids (pigments responsible for the color of vegetables and fruit, from orange-yellow to dark red), certain trace elements (zinc, selenium, etc.).

Free radicals more aggressive with age

With age, free radicals become more aggressive, especially vis-à-vis the collagen in the skin, which causes wrinkles. The aggression of free radicals in the senior age is largely linked to lifestyle during the “young” years. It is therefore essential to have a good intake of antioxidant foods and a healthy life all your life (little tobacco, not too much exposure to the sun, no overweight …).

Balanced diet, the best antioxidant

A diversified diet rich in vegetables and fruits of all kinds in principle provides the necessary dose of antioxidants. Supplementation with antioxidant substances should be considered only if the diet is deficient.
